Wastewater must be conveyed to a wastewater treatment plant. This can either be performed by transporting the sewage in means of transport or by sewerage. Sewerage is a network of arranged artificial water courses (sewer systems) intended for collecting and transporting wastewater, including inlet shafts, pumping stations and wastewater treatment plants. It has been proposed and planned that the whole area of interest should be connected to the sewerage according to the gradual growth of the agglomeration. In the past, surface sewerage prevailed in big cities as a system of open gutters and paved ditches; in terms of its function this has been surpassed. At present, flushing sewerage is used. The transport of waste material takes place in aquatic environment in buried sewers. All types of wastewater are mixed in a single transport sewer (combined sewerage), or there are also separate sewer systems collecting strongly polluted wastewater, water from households and sewers collecting rainwater and other little polluted types of water (separate sewerage).
