Biochemical oxygen consumption (BOD) is defined as the volume (weight) of oxygen consumed by microorganisms during biochemical decomposition of organic substances present in water under aerobic conditions. It is expressed in mg O2l-1. The most frequently used method is a five-day method– BOD5.
